A sit-stand desk is a floorplan problem first.
Most “best standing desk” lists start at 60 × 30 inches. That is a spare bedroom, not a studio alcove. DeskFootprint compares compact electric desks on footprint, published noise, height range, and what happens if it does not fit.
Numbers below are manufacturer published specs. We did not lab-test wobble or decibels. Methodology.
What actually decides the buy
Size
Depth is the apartment killer. A 24-inch top clears a hallway; 30 inches eats a bed walkway. Width under 48 inches is the usual studio target. Frame width matters as much as the top — a 42-inch top on a 41-inch-minimum frame is not a closet desk.
Noise
Motors only run while the desk moves. Brands publish ratings, not silence. FlexiSpot lists several frames under 50 dB; UPLIFT’s V3 spec sheet lists under 48 dB; Autonomous Desk Pro lists under 30 dB. Treat those as maker claims, not our meter.
Stability & returns
Single-motor two-stage frames are cheaper and often lighter. Dual-motor three-stage frames are the usual “less wobble at standing height” bet. Returns matter more than marketing: 30-day windows, restocking, and who pays the freight if a 70-lb box does not fit the stairwell.

Keep the desk you have
Converter, not a new desk
FlexiSpot AlcoveRiser M7 28″: 27.6×14.8″ footprint, 4.7–19.7″ lift, 33 lb desktop / 4.4 lb tray. Vari Pro Plus 36 needs 25.75″ of existing desk depth and holds 35 lb. Different job than a motorized frame.

What we will not say
Sit-stand desks let you change posture. They do not “cure back pain,” treat injury, or replace a clinician. If pain is the reason you are shopping, talk to a professional; we will talk about inches, decibel claims, and RMA rules.
