Standing desk converter vs full desk
A converter sits on the desk you already have. A sit-stand desk replaces it. The converter wins when the furniture stays and the load is light. The frame wins when you need the whole surface to move, more than ~35 lb of gear, or a 24-inch-deep apartment footprint without a 52-lb riser on top.

Buy a converter if
The kit is light

You need it tonight, no tools

The existing desk is deep enough
Vari needs 25.75 inches of desk depth. A 24-inch IKEA top is a bad match for Pro Plus 36. FlexiSpot M7 28″ advertises a 14.8-inch-deep footprint and vertical travel — that is the shallow-counter option.
Buy a full desk if
The whole surface has to move
Converters leave a ring of dead desk around the riser. Papers, a second laptop, and a microphone arm want the top to be the moving part.
Load or arms exceed ~35 lb
Electric frames in this cluster start at 110 lb (EC9) and run to 350–355 lb (Jarvis, E7, V3). Monitor arms clamp to the moving top, not to a 16-inch converter shelf.
Sit height on a riser is already wrong
A converter adds 4.5–4.7 inches at its lowest setting (Vari 4.5″, FlexiSpot M7 4.7″). If your current desk is already high, sitting gets worse. A 3-stage frame that drops into the low 20s (E7 Mini 22.8″ without top; V3 product 22.6″) is the fix.
You are replacing a cheap table anyway

Noise and neighbors
Converters have no motor rating to quote. Vari’s rowing lift is spring-assisted; reviews (including the brand’s own “silently” language in some markets) still describe a lock click. Electric desks only hum while traveling. If you raise the surface 20 times a day on calls, a published <48–50 dB motor may be less socially loud than a 52 lb riser thunk — or not. Use the trial.
